Celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month!
February 18, 2019
February is known for Valentine’s Day and the celebration of love. Did you know that February is also National Children’s Dental Health Month? This is the month that your children’s dentist in Syracuse is helping parents by increasing awareness about the importance of oral health. Here are some helpful tips and simple ideas you can use to make dental health a priority for your son or daughter.
Change Toothbrushes Often
Believe it or not, your family’s toothbrushes or brush heads need to be changed every three to four months. Toothbrushes with bristles that are frayed may not be as effective at removing plaque and bacteria from your teeth.
Keep them inspired about brushing by letting your kids pick toothbrushes with their favorite cartoon character or color. Consider switching to an electric brush for older children, which can do a lot of the hard work of brushing for them.
Visit Your Dentist Consistently
Like you do, children need consistent visits to the dentist every six months to monitor their oral health. Your children’s dentist uses x-rays to help detect any concerns early on, and regular visits allow them to track your child’s dental development.
Schedule your son or daughter’s next visit to the dentist today in honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month!
Check In With Your Kids
As children grow, they will start brushing their teeth independently. If they brush unattended, you may want to consider popping in for some check-ins to monitor their brushing habits. Kids sometimes don’t have the best skills when brushing, and you might be surprised at what you find! It may be time for a refresher course on proper brushing and flossing techniques to ensure they’re getting the best results.
Help Them Detect Plaque
As part of your check in, you might consider using a plaque disclosing tablet to help your kids see where they are missing during brushing. Give them the tablet to chew in their mouth after brushing, and bright color will appear anywhere there is still plaque. This is an excellent time for them to observe all the places that plaque can hide! Then they can see what it takes to brush the plaque away.
